It's been a while since we've had this discussion, and we've probably got a few new 'wonderers' reading the forum but not yet posting.

Use this as an introduction if you're just pondering around the outskirts not sure what to post about.

Who are you? Where in this wonderful world are you, and what do you do?

I'm Robsco, web-developer by day, and, erm, well, web-developer by night. I'm the main site administrator and developer. So if you want something adding or changing on the site, get posting, but less emails please. I get too many asking stuff like "are there any decent clubs in Outer Mongolia!" How I should know is beyond me, but post that question on the forum and I'm sure there'll be a few replies - we get around 250 visitors a day.

By the way guys/gals, I'm currently re-doing the whole forum, just to make it easier to sign-up and stay logged in, etc. I know that's been causing hassle for ages, and currently you have to wait for an email (containing your password) before you can post - a tad overkill me thinks.

Now who's up next?

Hi all, Ive just started judo and submission grappling about 3 months ago, i love the submission grappling but i find the stand up in judo very difficult. I have also been kickboxing on and off for a year.
I would love to try BJJ but there is nothing in my area. Do you guys think the Judo and the Submission grappling is a good substitute ? Oh yeah i live in Stoke on trent.

If you're doing Judo and Submission Grappling, then you're close-enough to BJJ.

I can imagine you think most people there are making mince-meat of you at Judo, but stick with it! It's definately one area (the standing grappling) that is sooooo important.

Personally I'm pants at the stand-up of BJJ, and wish I was a Brown Belt in Judo before starting BJJ.

What doesn't kill you will only make you better.

Oh yeah, welcome to the site btw.

I would've thought there'd be some BJJ clubs around you?

How far's Stoke from Nottingham? I'm crap with geography, all I know if there on the same river.

Hi all,

Started martial arts age 7, did Tang Soo Do until I was 13 (in Coventry), moved to south west england, then Shotokan for a year, then Tae Kwon Do until I was 21, then had a break (cheek bone and time off), then took up MMA a few years ago, had another break (ribs), and now train MMA/street self defence with BCA instructor who is excellent.

Job wise I work in health and fitness industry and also teach first aid and personal safety type stuff.

Cheers,

steve.

Hey all, I'm Lyndsey I'm 20 and i live between southport and preston in the northwest.

I'm a full time Nursery Nurse working with 0-2 year olds, which can be nice and stressful but very rewarding.

As for hobbies, well im into my cars in a big way especially the classic Mini And the other fairly obvious one would be jujitsu lol Got my black belt back in '99 then gold tab part 1 in '00, then unfortunately i got a rather bad injury causing me to take some time out, just around the same time my old club started messing around with who taught where and with my gcse's i decided enough was enough. Well earlier this year finally got round to finding a new club,.. and instead of starting where i left off im going straight for my senior black, so revising like mad, and training as much as possible, just need to watch i dont aggrivate my old injury/ find ways around it.... swinging weapons around is all good a fun, but when i have limited grip in my left hand due to tearing the ligaments in my thumb it becomes well even more fun

Hi
Im Deano 39, retired police officer, 1st dan judo and traditional jitsu, (have been for years) just getting into brazilian jitsu, seems to me to be just an extention of the original jitsu. Although i think it defends on the level of jitsu you have been doing, I have seen many, many styles over the years, those that do the fancy elaborate jitsu are unfortunately going to be left behind.

Hello all my name is Shaun
I reside and live in British Columbia Canada I am a senior meat clerk.

Ever since a very young age I have always been interested in protecting myself but I have also been one to be very conservative to when, where and to what extent I protect myself.
My favorite quote: "It takes more of a man to walk away from a fight then to get in one".
I am honestly thinking about taking further training have gone to see about it already but have come up short on what I want. All that I do know has been self trained.
My self training has mainly been Tai Chi Chuan with various other street style variables put up into the mix of things along with studies in a few other form's and well to finish it all off I am 29.

Hi Guys
I'm Andy. 1st Dan in Hankyo Kempo Ju Jitsu and a brown belt in Junsei Ryu Hoshin Justu. I'v just got back into the art after a a few years out. (We had a baby). I'm enjoying the training because it is a traditional style and the techniques are nasty! Beats the BJJ and MMA hands down! Before everyone starts shouting and saying BJJ & MMA are the best, I've done both for a long time and the techniques and training in MMA/BJJ are great for a sport but as a self defence.....I don't think so! MMA/BJJ guys just want to get the fight on the ground and usually end up pulling their opponent on to their guard, try doing that in a pub! The MMA guys that are happy to stand up and exchange a few punches always seem to lead with their head and put so much effort into every punch it leaves them off balance and easy to throw/take to the floor! I hope you guys dont think I'm being an arse but I'm getting a bit tired of BJJ/MMA instructors shouting about how it is the best self defence!

I look forward to some feedback on what seems to be a controversial issue.

I have studied Fu Jow Pai Kung Fu for four years and achieved the rank of assistant instructor. I have also studied Boxing and Jiu Jitsu. I find that a lot of the mma techniques which are prohibited on the ground drastically favor the grappler (did anybody see Renzo get knocked silly when Frank Shamrock threw some illegal knees while side mounted?) there are some nasty ways of taking out ppl on the ground which may sometimes act as a counter to sport jiu-jitsu/mma techniques. with that in mind I still thing BJJ is one of hte best self defense arts for one on one combat out there

Hi all. I've been doing Jujitsu and submission grappling for abour 6 years now. I recently got approached to help start a new MMA school in Telford Shropshire. Of course I jumped at the chance so we are kicking off in mid September. I'll be looking after the takedowns/defences and ground fighting, Lee Whitfield (ranked in the top 10 of British PRO Kickboxers)is handling the stand up stuff along with Doug Wildman (thai boxing) and Paul Bennet (kickboxing). Anyone in the area is welcome to come along. The class will be on a tuesday or thursday and a saturday(to be confirmed).

I can't wait to get going!

I live in the world best kept secret - Cumbria, right on the coast, looking back at the lakes.
I do jujitsu which I've done for the last 42 years (Jesus this makes me sound ancient).
In my earlier incarnation I fought full/ semi contact kickboxing and before that in karate competitions.
I've just recovered from a cancer scare which is why I have time to look around and see such nice new sites, I was always either teaching or training or fighting before.
They tell me it's good to slow down -
I HATE IT!
My advice to younger people, keep going, keep fit and one day you'll make it.
When I got cancer one of the first thoughts was 'I wonder if they'll give em a 10th dan now?' How sad is that.

I've got 28 years in Ju-Jitsu - now a 5th Dan.
I've cross-trained extensively in Kali and Muay Thai. Done a bit in Boxing.
Ex Metropolitan police officer (London, England)did nearly 15 years before getting seriously hurt and medically retired.
Ex-B.G.(Close protection) all over the place but mostly in Europe and West Africa.
Now living and teaching in Le Marche, Italy, where I run a residential martial arts and retreat centre.
I am married to a brilliant woman, and we have two amazing kids.
I committed to the Buddhist path about 13 years ago.
Still training, and I teach daytime and evenings throughout the week to private citizens (men and women but no kids at the moment - maybe later), Carabinieri (the para-military police here in Italy), traffic police, and some British ex-pats.

I am now training in Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu.

I use to train about 9 years ago... but due to school commitments i could not keep it up, so i left at yellow belt. Now im 24 i have re-joined the old dojo.

What brought me back to "ishin ryu JJ" was the no nonsense stlye of this particular JJ MA but still keeping the old JJ tradition alive.

On top of that the fitness demand has increased ten folds sinse i left... as im not a good gym person. I thought it would be a good idea to mix a MA i really enjoy toghether with increase of fitness.

im Tai, i work in IT, and im studying ju-jitsu to build self confidence as well as self-defence!

you could say my main base is in birmingham as my parents live here and im still a little shy and... well... poor to move out for real, but i work all over! i mostly use public transport systems which can be a nightmare for the timid like me.

my reasons for learning ju jitsu are mostly to build my self confidence and self defence technique! but im hoping with alot of practice when im ready to spar, it will improve my physique :)

ive always been kicking myself for being so easily bullied by people bigger than me or groups, im not trying to use ju-jitsu as a quick fix for my social anxieties, i know thats something i need to work on myself, but i figure if i study this art and really put some energy and commitment into this, ill respect myself more, and wont let myself be pushed around.

nice to meet you all forum! :D

hope you can change this later on, im new to this :) im new, sorry if i bug you too much with questions!

Hi guys. I am Nathan from Baltimore, Maryland USA. I am in the U.S. Air Force and recently started Ju Jitsu. I have been through Modern Army Combatives training that focused on BJJ.

I figured that Traditional Ju Jitsu would be a better sport to start in and then move to BJJ.

The Dojo that I go to teaches without sparring when you are in the begginer ranks so I am just learning the technique right now and will transition into Full Contact/Speed when i have my techniques down. My plan is to take Traditional Ju Jitsu for about a year and then move into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Any advice?

Nice forum!

why don't you start bjj now?its never to soon.what i'm trying to say to you is both arts are good, have great simularities but are yet worlds apart.i could go on forever about why, and the history of martial arts and facts.but just study a bit, you'll catch my drift.books, wiklepeadia(or what ever its called)youtube footage etc.theirs knowlege everywhere.so do them both as their not the same art!

im a returner to the Dojo, i trained for 5 years until i was 16 in Jikishin Ju Jitsu, then after an 8 year break due to an operation and starting a new job, i have decided to take up my well - missed hobby again. At the moment i only train once a week as i ease back into training and hope to do at least 3 times a week like i used to, Unfortunately i'm not with Jikishin anymore, but i've joined a wonderful new club, im just gutted it took so long to get back on the mat. currently a brown belt and hoping to have that black belt attained asap!
