I am about to start taking BJJ... when I get my uniform, do I get a white belt or do I have to go trough a test first?

We supply our people with their Gi and they don't EVER come with a white belt.

I've got about five white belts sitting in their unopened packets. I'll hand them to sensei, but I don't know how much use they'll be. What does everyone do with their old belts, keep them in case you start a new art?
