Escape From Bear Hugs - Green Belt Traditional Jujitsu

Escape Bear Hug (Shoulder Throw)

This technique is used when your attacker applies a bear hug from the back with your arms trapped inside.

Your attacker applies a bear hug from behind with your arms inside.

Perform a small jump taking your legs out to the side so you lower your body. At the same time, thrust your arms up to break your attackers hold.

Reach over your right shoulder with your left hand and grab your attackers right arm.

Pull your attacker onto your back and perform a stepping shoulder throw as shown.

You may finish the technique with strikes or joint locks.

Escape Bear Hug (Leg Hook)

This technique is used when your attacker applies a bear hug from the back with your arms outside.

Your attacker applies a bear hug from behind with your arms outside.

Strike hard at your attackers hand with your knuckles. If this does not release the grip, start rubbing hard on the top of your attackers hand with your knuckles.

Once the grip is broken, take a small step to the left with your left foot.

Reach between your legs and cup the back of your attackers left ankle.

Pull your attackers left ankle up to throw them backwards. You may want to pinch your knees as their leg comes up to prevent it going too high.

Strike with a stamp kick into your attackers groin.

Now step forward with your right foot. Be sure to keep hold of your attackers ankle at this point.

Drop your attackers ankle and sweep it to the left with your left leg as you spin anti-clockwise on the ball of your right foot.

Escape Bear Hug (Hip Throw)

This technique is used when your attacker applies a bear hug from the front with your arms inside.

Your attacker applies a bear hug from the front with your arms trapped inside.

Place both hands on your attackers hips and push yourself away. Also step back with your right foot.

With your hands still on your attackers hips, strike with your right knee to their groin.

Take your right arm behind your attackers back as you spin anti-clockwise on the ball of your left foot. Bend your knees ready for a standard hip throw.

Pull your attacker onto your back and straighten your legs.

Move your head towards your left knee twisting your upper body to throw your attacker to the ground. You may now finish with strikes or joint locks of your choice.

Escape Bear Hug (Head Hip Throw)

This technique is used when your attacker applies a bear hug from the front with your arms outside.

Your attacker applies a bear hug from the front with your arms outside.

Strike with two hammer-fists to your attackers ribs.

Bring your right arm up and strike the side of your attackers neck with your forearm.

Take your right arm round the back of your attackers neck and twist anti-clockwise so you are stood with your back to your attacker.

Bend your knees and pull your attacker onto your back. Straighten your legs ready for a head hip throw.

Move your head towards your left knee twisting your upper body to throw your attacker to the ground. You may now finish with strikes or joint locks of your choice.
