Takedowns???

Why is it so darn difficult for tall fighters to score takedowns on shorter fighters, and why is it so easy for little guys to score TDs on the bigger ones? And of course, the most important question, WHAT CAN TALLER FIGHTERS DO ABOUT IT?

I imagine it would have something to do with the fact that a smaller fighter can position himself lower and underneath the center of balance of the taller guy with less trouble, while the taller fighter must get lower, faster...
Any ideas?

smaller guys have an easier takedown because they find it easier to get under their opponents centre of gravity, which enables them to take guys down.
Bigger guys have to make a larger movement to get under their opponents centre of gravity which makes their takedown movement slower.

smaller guys can sometimes kick their legs away and sprawl quicker because they are shorter and have less to move. but because they are shorter and the bigger guy with his longer arms can reach around and grab their legs to hip heist or sit through to counter the sprawl.

big guys sprawl can be very effective as the shorter guy can have a hard time reaching the big sprawlers legs, or even if he can reach them, have trouble getting a long enough or deep enough grip to move anyone.

big guys can work to counter this by working on their sprawl and their takedown.
a good sprawl drill is to have a coach or partner stand near your mats and have you tip toe jogging or shadow boxing, and they shout "SPRAWL" at any random time, in which you sprawl and jump back up and carry on boxing or jogging.

Ah... that confirms my suspicions regarding little guys and their damn takedowns. I like the drill suggestion, though. I may indeed give it a shot.

My only other question is, other than drilling sprawls over and over and drilling your takedowns to increase their effective speed, can A taller fighter do anything to add to the effectiveness of their takedown? Or is the taller fighter only able to drill speed into his takedowns until they have surmounted the differences in height?

Thanks dude. good stuff.

Big guys can use different takedowns, takedowns from the clinche, the over under, double underhooks, hip lock , a 2 on 1. single legs work well for big guys.

also big guys can drill hard and mopre importantly smart to work getting takedowns on little guys, different setups for a 2 on 1 of an overhook work good for takedowns.
